Clint Carney has more than 18 years of experience in government affairs, public relations, and the legal profession. Carney brings communications and government affairs expertise to Southwest Strategies from his work with government officials, communities and media professionals throughout San Diego County as well as in Southern California’s Inland Empire of Riverside County and San Bernardino County.
At Southwest Strategies, Carney focuses on working with clients that face challenges when interacting with local governments and communities. By working directly with local residents, businesses and other stakeholders, Carney helps develop relationships and form coalitions to reach solutions on a variety of issues ranging from public infrastructure projects, private development and also public policy and legislative issues.
As a former Chief of Policy for San Diego City Councilmember Brian Maienschein, Carney managed numerous high-profile projects and policy assignments, and he also played a key role as a political strategist and speech writer. He was recognized for assisting fire survivors after the 2003 Cedar Fire and for resolving issues to help complete construction of State Route 56.
Prior to entering public service, Carney gained extensive legal experience in a variety of criminal and civil litigation issues ranging from murder trials and white collar crime to
product liability, professional negligence, construction litigation and wrongful death lawsuits.
Carney also serves as the President of San Diego Teen Court, an innovative and successful non-profit juvenile diversion program where juries of high school students impose binding sentences on first-time misdemeanor offenders. His strong commitment to community service is evidenced by his 12 years as a volunteer with Teen Court, three years of service with the San Diego Archeological Center and previous work with Special Olympics and other non-profit agencies.
Carney earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Virginia, and his law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. He lives in La Jolla.
